Fatal car accident: Four people were killed Sunday afternoon when an SUV crossed the median strip on Interstate 5 and crashed into two oncoming vehicles near Hood-Franklin Road in Elk Grove.

•   An SUV driver lost control on the freeway and crossed over the center median into oncoming traffic.

•   The SUV crashed head-on into two other vehicles. The SUV and one of he other vehicles rolled several times, ejecting passengers.

•   Four people died at the scene, including the SUV driver and the driver of one of the vehicles he hit.

•   Seven people were injured, some of them critically. At least one was airlifted to a trauma center.

The deadly freeway crash occurred at around 3:30 p.m., 15 miles south of Sacramento, according to a report in the Sacramento Bee.

California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Bradley said a 2004 Ford Expedition with nine people inside was traveling southbound on the freeway when the driver apparently lost control for unknown reasons.

The SUV crossed over the median strip and crashed into two northbound vehicles — a  2012 Honda Accord and a 1997 Toyota Rav4 that was towing a boat. Bradley said authorities did not yet know what happened to cause the driver to lose control.

“We don’t have a cause to release as yet,” Bradley told the Bee. “Initially, we are investigating an unsafe turning movement that caused the car to leave the roadway.”

The Expedition and the Accord both rolled over multiple times. Some passengers were ejected from both cars, while others were pinned in their vehicles.

The driver of the Expedition — tentatively identified as a Berkeley man in his 50s — died at the scene. Two of his passengers also died. The Sacramento County Coroner’s office identified them as 50-year-old Kulwant Kaur Gill of Lathrop (San Joaquin County) and a 70-year-old woman from Berkeley. Both of them had to be extricated from the vehicle, according to a CBS Channel 13 News report

The Accord driver died at the scene. His identifying information was not released as of Monday afternoon.

Seven other people were injured, three of them critically. Their injuries ranged from broken wrists and ribs to major injuries, according to the Bee report. A passenger is the Accord suffered major injuries, as did one of the passengers int eh Expedition.

The six other injury victims were passengers in the Expedition — a woman in her 40s and a 17-year-old boy, both from Lathrop, plus three women ages 18, 19 and 23 from Berkeley, and a 20-year-old man from Berkeley.

One of the victims was airlifted to U.C. Davis Medical Center. The others were rushed to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Kaiser South, Sutter General, and Methodist Hospital.

“We are going to be conducting an investigation on the Expedition to determine if there was a mechanical problem that caused it to leave the roadway,” Bradley told the Bee.

The CBS News report said tire tread was missing from the Expedition, which could be indicative of tire failure being a possible cause.

A 61-year-old woman was killed and two others suffered major injuries Friday morning when a  blown tire caused an SUV rollover crash on Interstate 5 in Bakersfield.

•   The right rear wheel of a Chevy Suburban had a flat tire and started to wobble at freeway speed on Interstate 5.

•   The SUV went out of control and rolled over several times, killing one of the occupants.

•   Five others — including two teens and a 10-year-old — were hospitalized. Only one passenger, a 5-year-old boy,  escaped injury.

The fatal freeway crash occurred at about 6:30 a.m., according to a KBAK News report.

California Highway Patrol officer Kelly Olsen said 63-year-old Juvento Magana of Baldwin Park was driving a white 2006 Chevrolet Suburban SUV north on Interstate 5 in the fast lane when the accident occurred. There were six passengers in the van.

Just after the SUV passed the Panama Lane exit, a mechanical failure caused the right rear wheel to wobble and the tire blew out, Olsen said. Magana was unable to control the wobbling and the vehicle went out of control.

The SUV veered into the center median and then overturned and rolled over several times, Olsen said. The CHP does not know how many times the SUV rolled.

The Kern County coroner’s office confirmed that one of the passengers, 61-year-old Maria Este Montejano De Magana of Baldwin Park, died at the scene.

The driver and a 38-year-old woman, whose name was not released, were among five victims who suffered minor to major injuries and were taken to area hospitals to be treated, according to a report in the Fresno Bee. The other three were girls aged 19, 17 and 10. The seventh occupant, a 5-year-old boy, was not injured.

All of the occupants in the SUV were properly fastened into seat belts, Olsen said.

Five people were hospitalized — some with major injuries — after a shredded tire caused an SUV rollover crash Thursday morning in Morgan Hill, about 20 miles southeast of San Jose.

•   A Ford Explorer was traveling on a highway when a tire shredded and caused the SUV to roll over.

•   The Explorer tumbled off the highway, through a fence and into a flood channel.

•   Five of the six occupants of the SUV were seriously injured and hospitalized.

Morgan Hill Injury LawyersThe highway crash occurred at 11:47 a.m., according to a report in the Morgan Hill Times.

California Highway Patrol officer Jaime Rios said 28-year-old Lanina Aguirre of Gilroy was driving a 1995 Ford Explorer northbound on Highway 101 near the Middle Avenue overpass when she heard a loud popping sound from one of the tires.

The tire shredded and blew out. Aguirre was unable to control the SUV, which rolled over and off of the freeway.

The SUV tumbled through a barbed-wire fence and landed upside down in a grassy flood channel about 75 feet from the edge of the highway.

Some of the dry grass caught fire, but firefighters quickly put it out.

Rios said shredded tire fragments were strewn along the side of the highway where the SUV rolled off the road.

Five of the six occupants of the SUV were hospitalized at San Jose Regional Medical Center.

Morgan Hill Car Accident LawyersA 30-year-old man suffered critical injuries, including severe lacerations and major internal injuries, Rios said. He was airlifted to the hospital.

A 26-year-old man also suffered major injuries and was transported to the hospital via ground ambulance.

A 4-year-old girl sustained a major head injury. She and a 1-year-old infant whose condition was not known were transported via ground ambulance to the hospital.

Aguirre suffered “various lacerations,”police said.  She was taken to the hospital via ground ambulance. Her injuries were described as moderate.

The only person who was not hospitalized was an 18-year-old girl who complained of pain but did not require further medical treatment, Rios said.

All of the victims were Gilroy residents.
