A 78-year-old man was killed in a pedestrian accident in Yuba City.

Police are awaiting toxicology reports in a pedestrian accident that took the life of a 78-year-old man Sunday in Yuba City.

•  An elderly man was crossing the street when he was struck and killed by a pickup truck.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

More than 4,000 pedestrians are killed every year — 11 every day — after being struck by motor vehicles, according to the latest National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics. An additional 59,000 are seriously injured.

The latest NHTSA figures show that:

  • 69 percent of pedestrians killed in 2009 were males.
  • Almost three out of every four pedestrian fatalities occur in urban areas (72 percent).
  • The top four states for pedestrian fatalities are California, Florida, Texas, and New York. These four states make up 41 percent of pedestrian fatalities nationwide while only accounting for 5 percent of the total traffic fatalities across the country.

Los Angeles: Suspect Arrested in Fatal Pedestrian Accident

North Hollywood Pedestrian Accident Lawyers

An elderly man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on the street in front of his home in North Hollywood.

Fatal pedestrian accident: Police arrested a suspect in the hit-and-run death of a 72-year-old man who was struck while crossing the street to get breakfast Sunday in North Hollywood.

•   A 21-year-old driver in a black GMC truck ran over an elderly pedestrian who was crossing the street in front of his home.

•  The driver fled the scene, but later was involved in an accident on the I-5 freeway.

•   Police found the elderly victim’s wallet and other possessions in the wrecked truck.

The deadly pedestrian accident occurred at around 5 a.m. in the 8100 block of Lankershim Blvd, according to a CBS News report.

Sgt. Larry Jones from the Los Angeles Police Department said the elderly man was walking across the street from his home to get breakfast at McDonald’s when he was struck by a black GMC S15 pick-up truck.

“A pickup truck was seen leaving the scene of the accident, apparently with a flat tire,” Jones said. “[The driver] stopped to change the flat tire.”

The victim, whose identity has been withheld pending notification of his next of kin, was transported to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills where he died, according to a City News Service report quoted in the LAist.

The driver fled the scene in the truck, but two hours later was involved in another accident on Interstate 5. The truck flipped over and the driver — 21-year-old Adrian Cervantes of Panorama City — was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center to be treated for injuries he sustained in the second accident.

Investigators who searched Cervantes’ vehicle found the 72-year-old pedestrian accident victim’s wallet and other personal property, Jones said.

“I haven’t seen somebody run a victim over, come back around and take their property from them, and then leave,” said Jones.

Authorities don’t know why Cervantes had the victim’s possessions, but there was speculation that the suspect may have removed he identifying information when he stopped to fix his tire, according to an NBC News report.

Cervantes was booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.

According to the Los Angeles Daily News, police are urging anyone who saw the pedestrian accident or helped change a flat tire near Lankershim Boulevard and Sherman Way to call Valley Traffic detectives at 818-644-8034.

Witnesses may also call Los Angeles Police Department tip line at 877-LAPD-247 (527-3247). To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477) or text “LAPD” followed by a message to CRIMES (274637).

Ventura: Bus Driver Arrested in Fatal Crash, DUI Suspected

Ventura Pedestrian Accident Lawyers

A school bus driver was arrested on DUI charges after she struck and killed an elderly woman. (Photo: Ventura County Star)

Fatal DUI crash: A school bus driver was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance when she struck and killed an elderly woman trying to cross the street Wednesday in Ventura.

•    A school bus driver who recently underwent back surgery struck and killed an elderly pedestrian in a  crosswalk.

•    Investigators said the driver failed a field sobriety test and that she was under the influence of a controlled substance.

•    The driver was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI.

•    None of the 11 children on the bus was hurt.

The tragic pedestrian accident occurred at 2:55 p.m., according to a report in the Ventura County Star.

The California Highway Patrol said the bus, driven by 54-year-old Ventura resident Joanne Madaule, had 11 disabled children aboard when the accident occurred.

Madaule was driving nortbound on Brookshire Avenue at a very slow rate of speed when she turned left onto Woodland Street and hit 75-year-old Marguerita McIntosh, also of Ventura.

CHP officer Steve Reid said McIntosh was in the crosswalk and was crossing the street legally when she was hit by the bus. She suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to Ventura County Medical Center in critical condition. She died from her injuries at 6:38 p.m., according to the Star report.

No other injuries were reported. The children were not physically hurt, but school officials said extra counselors would be available to make sure the kids were all right after the trauma they witnessed.

Officer Reid said a drug recognition evaluator determined that Madaule was under the influence of a controlled substance. She was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter and felony driving under the influence.

Madaule’s husband told CBS News that investigators made a mistake. He said his wife had undergone back surgery a week ago and still had IV needle marks on her arms. He said he believes that blood tests will prove Madaule was not on drugs at the time of the accident.

CHP officials confirmed that Madaule had failed a field sobriety test, according to ABC News. Reid said final blood test results would be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office, which will decide whether to file criminal charges against the bus driver.

San Francisco: Taxi Runs Red Light, Kills Pedestrian

San Francisco Pedestrian Accident Lawyers

A taxi ran a red light before striking and killing a pedestrian in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district.

Pedestrian fatality: A taxi driver ran a red light, was hit by another vehicle, and then struck and killed a pedestrian Saturday in San Francisco‘s Tenderloin district.

•   A taxi driver ran a red light and was hit by another car.

•   Both vehicles spun out and the taxi hit a pedestrian who was legally crossing the street.

•   The pedestrian died.

The fatal accident occurred just before 7 p.m., according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle.

San Francisco Police Department Albie Esparza said 38-year-old Edmund Capalla was legally crossing the intersection at Eddy and Larkin streets when he was hit by a taxi.

Witnesses said the taxi driver, whose identity was not released, had  run a red light and was hit by another car entering the intersection. The impact sent both cars into a spin and the taxi struck Capalla.

Capalla suffered severe injuries. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he died.

Esparza said no charges had yet been filed against the taxi driver, but recommendations will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office once the investigation is complete.

“We have to see if he was negligent,” Esparza told the San Francisco Examiner. “He may have had a medical emergency, I don’t know.”

That response angered Walk SF executive director Elizabeth Stampe.

“The police should be telling us what actually happened, not speculating on excuses for the driver,” Stampe told the SF Streets blog. We know there was a medical emergency – Edmund Capalla was hit and killed while walking. We expect solid information from the police about how this occurred. Walk SF and its members want to see swift action on this case from the police and, if appropriate, from the District Attorney’s office.”

Capalla’s death was the eleventh known pedestrian fatality in San Francisco this year. In February, a  paratransit van driver was caught on video running over a pedestrian in a crosswalk at Eddy and Leavenworth streets, two blocks away from the intersection where Capalla was killed.  Police eventually issued that driver a traffic citation, but no criminal charges ever were filed.

Visalia: Victim Identified in Fatal Wheelchair Crash on Hwy 93

Visalia Pedestrian Accident Lawyers

An unlicensed driver faces felony manslaughter charges after striking and killing a wheelchair-bound pedestrian near Visalia.

The Tulare County coroner’s office announced Thursday that it has identifiedpedestrian who was struck and killed Tuesday on Highway 63 near Visalia.

•   A pedestrian in a wheelchair attempted to cross a four-lane street/highway at an intersection.

•   An  unlicensed driver in a Jeep SUV didn’t see the man at first and then panicked, hitting the gas pedal instead of the brake.

•   The Jeep slammed into the wheelchair, knocking the man to the ground. He died from his injuries.

The fatal accident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, according to an article in the Fresno Bee.

The California Highway Patrol said a pedestrian in a wheelchair — later identified as 86-year-old Benjamin Laigo of Orosi — was attempting to cross Highway 63 at the intersection with Miller Road at the time of the accident.

Visalia Pedestrian Accident LawyersCHP Officer Chris Wright told the Visalia Times-Delta that Laigo was in an unmarked crosswalk when he was struck and killed by a 1991 Jeep Cherokee traveling northbound on Highway 63 at about 35 mph.

“He was right at the intersection,” Wright said.

Wright said the driver of the Jeep, 52-year-old Julio Dominguez of Cutler, told officers he didn’t see Laigo in the street  until his 8-year-old grandson shouted, “Watch out!”

Dominguez then panicked and stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake, Wright said. The Jeep slammed into the wheelchair, throwing Laigo onto the road.

The 86-year-old victim was airlifted to Tulare Regional Medical Center (in the city of Tulare), where he died from the injuries he suffered in the accident.

Dominguez was not arrested at the scene, Wright said, but he was visibly distraught.

“He was pretty shaken up about it,” Wright said. “He made a mistake.”

Wright said the CHP would request that the District Attorney’s Office file charges against Dominguez, including misdemeanor manslaughter, driving without a license, and felony failure to yield to a pedestrian.

Fatal pedestrian accident: Investigators have identified a man who was struck and killed by a speeding car while he waited at a bus stop Thursday in Mountain View.

•   A speeding car ran a red light and struck a man waiting in a bus shelter.

•   The car smashed the shelter and drug the victim into the road, then went up onto the lawn of an apartment building.

•   The victim died at the scene. The 21-year-old driver was hospitalized.

•   Police said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be involved.

Mountain View police spokesperson Jaime Garrett said the accident victim was 50-year-old William Ware of Mountain View, according to a report in the San Jose Mercury News.

Garrett said the accident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. at California Street and Escuela Avenue.

Witnesses told the Mountain View Patch news site that a navy-blue Audi A4 appeared to be speeding when it ran a red light at the intersection. The Audi struck Ware — who was standing at the VTA bus stop on the south side of the intersection — and dragged him about 30 or 40 feet.

The impact smashed up the bus shelter, but did not stop the Audi. The car continued up onto the grounds of the Maplewood Apartment Community and came to a stop on the lawn, about 100 feet from the bus shelter.

Ware died at the scene.

The driver of the Audi,  a 21-year-old Mountain View man, was taken to a hospital to be treated for undisclosed injuries, according to an NBC News report. Police said he did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Community members started a makeshift memorial on the bus bench as soon as word got out. In an article entitled, “Remembering William Ware,” people shared memories and announced details about Ware’s memorial service. He was remembered by bus drivers and people who worked at his favorite Peet’s coffee shop, as well as by neighbors and friends.

Police arrested a 36-year-old driver on Saturday for a hit-and-run accident that killed a wheelchair-bound woman Friday in El Cajon.

•   A woman was trying to cross the street in her wheelchair when she was struck by a PT Cruiser.

•   She was thrown from her chair onto the road and died at the scene. The driver did not stop.

•   Police found debris from the vehicle that led them to the suspected driver’s home.  He was arrested and jailed on suspicion of felony hit and run.

The fatal pedestrian accident occurred shortly after 9 p.m., according to a Channel 10 News report.

California Highway Patrol officer Brian Pennings said a wheelchair-bound woman was trying to cross Olde Highway 80 near Flinn Springs when she was struck by a dark colored SUV-type vehicle.

The impact knocked the wheelchair down and threw the victim onto the roadway. The vehicle that struck the woman fled the scene.

Sheriff’s deputies, CHP officers, and firefighter emergency response crews who responded to the scene found the victim unconscious and unresponsive. Paramedics attempted to resuscitate her, but she did not respond and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased victim as 49-year-old Laurie Susan Whitlow, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. She lived at a residential care home in unincorporated El Cajon.

Witnesses who called 911 immediately after the accident told police that the vehicle looked like a Chrysler PT Cruiser. Investigators found debris from a PT Cruiser that led them to the El Cajon residence of 36-year-old Anthony Olsen, Pennings said.

Olsen was arrested at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday and was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. Bail was set at $50,000. The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned on May 22.
