Brentwood: 5 Injured in 5-Car Accident on Vasco Road

Brentwood Car Accident Lawyers

Five people were injured in an accident started by a driver who crossed the center line on Vasco Road (above) near Brentwood.

Five people were injured Thursday morning in a multi-car accident started by a driver who crossed the center line and hit an oncoming vehicle on Vasco Road in an unincorporated area of Brentwood.

•    A driver in a Chevy Malibu crossed the center line on a rural road and crashed into a pickup truck.

•    Both cars crashed into other vehicles. The pickup truck then crashed head-on into a Hummer and then rolled down an embankment.

•    A passenger was ejected from the pickup truck and suffered a severe head injury.

•    The other four victims were presumed to have minor injuries.

The major injury crash occurred shortly before 7 a.m. on Vasco Road south of Walnut Boulevard, according to an article in the Contra Costa Times.

California Highway Patrol investigators reported that  50-year-old Jaqueline Simpson of Antioch was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu southbound on Vasco Road when she crossed the center line.

The Malibu hit a 2005 Ford F-650 pickup truck driven by 42-year-old Guillermo Bustos of Concord.

The impact sent both vehicles out of control and they both crashed into other cars. The Malibu struck a 1998 Mercedes station wagon driven by 54-year-old Delfina Calderon of Livermore, while the F-650 pickup truck hit a 2009 Ford Focus driven by 51-year-old Donnell Miller of Antioch.

The Ford Focus came to a stop on the west shoulder of the road, but the F-650 pickup truck kept moving into oncoming traffic, where it slammed head-on into a 2007 Hummer driven by 46-year-old Douglas Vanhorn of Brentwood. The force  of that collision caused the F-650 pickup to spin out, flip over, and roll down an embankment on the west side of the road, according to the CHP report.

One of the F-650′s passengers, 29-year-old Jose Dominguez of San Jose, was ejected from the vehicle while it was rolling down the embankment. Dominguez suffered a severe traumatic brain injury (concussion), broken nose, and lacerations to his ear, the CHP report said. He was airlifted via helicopter to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

A second passenger in the pickup truck, whose name was not released, was taken to Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch. No information was released about the severity of that person’s injuries.

Miller and Calderon suffered minor injuries and were transported by ground ambulance to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Antioch to be treated.

The CHP report did not identify the fifth injured person or give any details about their injuries. The accident remains under investigation.

A freshman at U.C. Berkeley is in a coma after suffering a critical head injury Saturday night when he fell while climbing down a drainpipe at a fraternity house.

•   A Cal freshman who had been drinking attempted to climb down a three-story frat house by clinging to a drainpipe.

•   The pipe broke and he fell to the ground. He suffered severe head and neck injuries.

•   The young man is in a coma, in critical condition, at Highland Hospital.

•   Police say no foul play is suspected.

The tragic accident occurred at  about 11:30 p.m., according to a report in the Berkeley Voice.

University officials said Andrew Crowley, a member of the Cal crew team, was found on a path between the Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Kappa Tau fraternity houses on Piedmont Avenue.

Berkeley police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss said Crowley was unconscious and had an obvious and severe brain injury with “a lot of bleeding” when police arrived at the scene. She said he ”displayed objective symptoms of alcoholic beverage intoxication.”

Witnesses said Crowley had been climbing down a drainpipe on the back side of the three-story Phi Gamma Delta house — known as the Fiji house — at 2395 Piedmont Avenue.  They said he had made it about halfway down when the pipe came loose from the building. He fell backward to the ground.

Crowley suffered severe head trauma and a broken neck, the Daily Californian reported. He was rushed to the Level II trauma center at Highland Hospital in Oakland, where spokesperson Jerri Randrup confirmed that he was in critical condition.

Phi Gamma Delta president John Fitzgerald said Crowley had not been inside of the house on Saturday. He said no one knew he was climbing or had fallen from the house until police arrived.

“We’re not sure why he would choose to do that,” Fitzgerald said.

Crowley is not a member of the fraternity, but his brother Spencer was a member before he graduated from Cal last year, Fitzgerald said.

Kusmiss told the Daily Cal that no evidence of foul play was found. The Berkeley Police Department is treating the incident as a “terrible accident,” she said, but “homicide detectives were notified due to the severity of the young man’s injuries.”
