From working with a team of medical experts to litigating at trial, the brain injury lawyers at the Blackman Legal Group fight to make sure our clients have access to the full range of treatment options available for their injury.

Treatment for the TBI patient is a long and difficult road, and rehabilitation may last months or years. Brain damage is often irreversible, and while surgery and other procedures may stabilize the patient and prevent further damage, it may not be possible to repair the harm that has been done. Nevertheless, many treatment options are available to help victims regain a high degree of lost cognitive or motor function.

Treatment comes in two main stages: acute and rehabilitative.

Initial treatment will likely occur in the emergency room, with the goal of stabilizing the patient and preventing death or coma. Emergency surgery may be required to reduce swelling or deal with bleeding in the brain.

Once the emergency issues are dealt with, acute care continues with hospitalization in a major trauma center. Further surgery is often needed, designed to repair the damage as much as possible and prevent further injury.

As soon as the patient is stable, the rehabilitative stage of treatment begins, with the goal being to restore as much function as possible.

A physiatrist is usually in charge of coordinating rehabilitation. Physiatrists, or rehabilitation physicians, are medical doctors who are experts at diagnosing and treating pain, restoring maximum function, and leading a team of medical professionals who each have a role to contribute in the rehabilitation of the whole person.

Other professionals involved in rehabilitation include dietitians, ear, nose, and throat doctors, internists, neurologists, neuropsychologists, neurosurgeons, occupational therapists, ophthalmologists, physical therapists, plastic surgeons, psychiatrists, psychologists, radiologists, recreation therapists, social workers, speech/language pathologists, and vocational rehabilitation counselors.
