Fatal car accident: A woman and a 4-year-old child were killed Saturday night — and a 1-year-old child was in critical condition — when a U-Haul truck rear-ended a disabled car on Highway 60 in Ontario.
• A woman with two children in her car apparently lost control of the vehicle and spun out on the freeway. The car stalled.
• A U-Haul truck hit the car from behind. Both vehicles sustained major damage.
• The woman and one of the children in the car died. The other child was in critical condition.
• The CHP said alcohol was not a factor.
The deadly freeway crash occurred shortly after 8 p.m., according to a report in the Inland Daily Bulletin.
California Highway Patrol officials said they received several 911 calls saying that a small car had somehow lost control and spun out on westbound Highway 60 near Grove Avenue.
The car stalled in the middle of the freeway, according to a ABC News report. Witnesses said a U-Haul truck crashed into the car from behind.
The details of the accident were still being investigated, but photos show the car smashed up against a guard rail, facing the wrong direction.
The Daily Bulletin reported that motorists stopped to help and at least one of them attempted to perform CPR on one of the victims.
A 4-year-old child who had been riding in the car died at the scene. The woman who was driving the car and a 1-year-old child suffered severe injuries. Both were transported to a nearby hospital, where the woman died. The 1-year-old remained in critical condition.
CHP investigators told ABC News that the driver of the U-Haul truck was cooperating and that alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
