Two women were killed on their way home from work Monday night when a FedEx big-rig crashed into their car on Interstate 805 in San Diego.

•   A Honda Civic with three women inside merged onto the 805 freeway in San Diego and went into a spin.

•   The car spun across traffic lanes and into the path of a FedEx semi truck pulling two trailers. The truck broadsided the car.

•   The driver of the Honda Civic was hospitalized. Both of her passengers died at the scene. The truck driver was not hurt.

The fatal freeway accident occurred at around 10 p.m., according to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

California Highway Patrol officer Marc Hale said a  female driver, whose name was not released, lost control of a Honda Civic immediately after it entered the freeway from the Clairemont Mesa Boulevard on-ramp.

The car spun across the freeway into the path of a FedEx big-rig pulling two trailers. The truck driver slammed on his brakes but was unable to avoid slamming into the passenger side of the car, Hale said.

The impact forced the car off of the road. It came to rest off the right shoulder of the freeway near some trees and a concrete retaining wall that runs along Cannington Drive.

Hale said 56-year-old Thoy Insixiengmay was riding in the front passenger seat and 59-year-old Tem Thirakul was riding in the back seat. Both women died at the scene.

The driver suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital to be treated. The exact nature and extent of her injuries was not disclosed.

All three women in the car worked at Di-Chan, a popular Thai restaurant in Clairemont Mesa. They had just finished their evening shift two minutes earlier and were headed home.

The truck driver did not report any injuries.

According to a CBS Channel 8 News report, family members of the deceased women have gotten conflicting reports from authorities about what happened in the accident. Some reports said the Honda spun out and then was hit by the truck (as stated above), while other reports said the truck hit the car first and that caused the car to spin out.
